Hey, guys!  Hope you are doing well and staying healthy.  Of course, we could not have foreseen the current circumstances that are keeping us from the classroom; however, we will continue with your education the best we can from home.  Please bear with us as we attempt to navigate through these uncertain times. Send all emails to rhabetz@beau.k12.la.us.  I will be in touch through google classroom with instructions for moving forward with English I. Stay safe and healthy, and I hope to see you all again soon!

4/2/20 MESSAGE TO MY STUDENTS:

Please be sure you are checking Google Classroom for online resources and materials.  I will soon be uploading the text of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (also available as a Kindle ebook).  This novel was to be our final work of the school year; I regret not having the opportunity to cover this material with all of you.  So instead, I invite you to read and enjoy. :)

IntroThe Outsiders is a coming-of-age novel written in 1967 and focuses on the tension between two groups of different social and economic status.  The narrator (Ponyboy Curtis) recounts the interactions of these “gangs” that create conflict throughout the story.  It is a story of adolescent growth and maturity, finding acceptance and understanding, and dealing with loss and change.  As you read, try to dissect the characters; find out what motivates their actions and defines their personalities.

Without giving away any spoilers (I’m not Shakespeare ;)), I’d like you to think about the existence of different social groups, how that may affect your interaction with your peers, and if you believe these affiliations to be real or perceived.  Or, is the perception of these differences what make them reality?

Give this book a fair chance – I think you will enjoy it!

**I will also be posting the graphic organizers, discussion questions, and notes to accompany the novel.   These resources are meant to assist your own process of active reading and to provide guidance.  Please feel welcome to email me any questions or thoughts you may have while reading.  Though this must be done independently, I’d like to remain as connected as possible!**

3/18/20 MESSAGE TO MY STUDENTS:

Finalized 3rd quarter grading period:  All assignments/grades that were taken during the last two weeks we were in school (Odyssey texts) have been excused.  This means that you received your points if you were able to turn in those assignments; if not, you received and "E" in the grade book, which does not count against you in any way.

The Romeo and Juliet Theme Essays that were due on February 21st have also been input.  Unfortunately, I was still missing many submissions.  Due to these circumstances and being unable to address missing assignments in person, if an essay was not submitted, a grade of 50% was given, instead of zero.  If you believe you completed an essay, but received 50%, please email me and resubmit your work.  I can still make changes as necessary.  Over the next few days, I will send pictures of your writing task with my comments so that you can understand your score. I was quite lenient when awarding points for this essay since you were denied the opportunity to redo the essay for more points.  If you have any questions or concerns after viewing you grade, please email me and let me know.
